Just finished this piece for a client, a gorgeous Coton De Tulear named Simba. I've never actually seen one of these little guys in person, but I hear that they make great companions.

This is an 8"x10" mechanical pencil piece on Strathmore Bristol Smooth paper.

I'm loving the tonal contrast and details that I am able to achieve with the mechanical pencil, so I think I've found my new favorite medium.

Family portrait, and yes, the dogs are included as family. This is an 11"x17" piece on heavy weight paper. A really nice size for framing.

This is going to officially be the last post on this blog. I'm am semi-retiring this as my main blog and focusing on the business now. This will be saved for art only, so any portraits or paintings that I have will be displayed here, but photography and dogs will be no more.

This dog was just gorgeous, so I had to give it a whirl. The above is a new style that will be available for pet portraits. Acrylic on canvas or illustration board, this style is more about shape than detail, but really portrays the subject nicely.

This piece isn't quite done yet as I need to add a few more dark areas in the ears, and of course, my signature, but I had an itch to get it on the blog right away. And yes, I will have more samples soon, but baby E keeps cutting into (in a good way) my painting time.

I've managed to finagle a little time for myself to putter with the acrylics, and the results are below.

I find that the more natural the photo, the more approachable people seem, and isn't that the point of photos for real estate agents? I think we accomplished that in this session.

Hello, my name is Jersey and I am a sweet fella of 9 years old. I am looking for a new home cause I got kicked out when the kids grew up and moved out, went to stay with one of them, but now she is going to be away all the time with new job! I am a very nice boy, and get along well with cats and doggies too! As you can see by my reading ability, I am very clever, and can pick up new tricks in the blink of an eye! I can guard things and people if you let me, but if you show me that I don't need to and get rewards when I don't, then I wont. I sometimes get scared of strangers running up to me, but who wouldn't? Nice strangers are just fine. I am sad that I need to look for a new home at this stage of my life, but hopeful that some nice person out there feels for me and wants to give a nice guy a second chance at happiness. I love walkies, and promise to take you on lots of them too! We can keep each other in great shape!

Welcome New Camera! By Photographer Julie Deans

My built-in models helped me break-in the new Canon and new lighting/backdrops that I've acquired. And yes, my XT was enthusiastically adopted by my father-in-law, so he now has a new, camera loving owner.

I did get a little ahead of myself though, as you will notice (I can't help it), I have yet to iron out the wrinkles in the back drops, and didn't set up all the lighting, but I had to get a feel on how things would turn out right away ... I'm not impatient, just excited.

Was it obvious from the above shots that it's a Canon? I love Canon.

Note how I let baby E chew the lens cap before the little dog. I love her, but baby sharing dog saliva is just gross, no matter how clean my Jack Russell is.

So, this is a tribute to my XT and what it is capable of. I've finally taken a teeny upgrade step, and my XT will soon be adopted by my father-in-law who will provide him with a great, loving home. He's not yet aware that he will be adopting him, it's suppose to be a bit of a surprise. And if, for what ever reason, the XT cannot be adopted, he will live out the rest of his days here as he has served me well - it's amazing what you can do with an entry level camera and a couple of good lenses, but now it's time for bigger and better things in my world of DSLR photography.

God speed XT - we've had a lot of fun together.

Jude is a very loving dog that loves to be near her people. She has lived in an apartment her entire life and quickly warms into the hearts of her neighbors and friends. Jude LOVES to chase a ball and will retrieve for a treat until she is exhausted. She loves to go for walks and explore new places. She is as feisty as a young jack and does require exercise. She is good with other dogs but won't tolerate being jumped on or bullied. Jude is dearly loved by her owner and has been his loving companion her entire life. Unfortunately he has advanced health issues that now prevent him from walking Jude and giving her the exercise she needs. Jude is a perfect companion for someone looking for an easy dog who loves a good time.

Meet Booker - Jack Russell Rescue of Ontario

Booker is approximately 3 years old and is a JRT/Chihuahua cross. He is quite timid until he gets to know you and then he is your best friend! He is very sweet, absolutely loves to sit on your lap and roll over for a good belly rub. Booker has had a rough beginning to his life and was going to be shot until he came to JRT Rescue. He is from a puppy mill where he was used for breeding, and has not been socialized much. However, he is extremely dog friendly and loves to play with other dogs. He has never been walked on leash, and going out the front door is still quite traumatic for him, so his new owners will have to be aware of this. But he does love to be outside, and will happily spend hours in the backyard with the other dogs. He would probably do well in a fairly quiet home without small children. He is completely crate trained and vetted. Booker needs to learn to trust people and be comfortable with them. He will make someone a fabulous, loyal pet if he is given the chance. Adoption Fee: $250.00

I just finished working on this little pup over the weekend, and am on my way to deliver it to the client today. A nice little 5"x7" in pencil makes a perfect Christmas gift. Two Dachshunds Posing - Artist, Julie Deans

What an adorable little pair of dogs!! And very photogenic I might add.

This is the result of a photo-shoot from a couple weeks ago with Andy and Ruby. The weather was great, the air was crisp, but sun kept us warm, and the dogs were entertaining. These little canines have the "terrier 'tude", and considering they were originally bred to hunt badger, they needed that 'tude to be able to do their job. The personalities of these little hounds are very terrier-like, and remind me of Jack Russells (but a bit watered down, which is a good thing - no dog really compares to JRT's in 'tude).

A fun photo-shoot with great results and the owners were extremely pleased.

I'm Addicted! Artist, Julie Deans

The little guy is really quite photogenic, so he's been added to my list of favorite things to photograph along side the little dog for number one spot.

And I can't resist photos of them together - it's really quite the combination, especially since it doubles the cuteness factor. Little boys and Jack Russells go well together.

The little dog was not impressed with this pose. She loathes Halloween because it means that she has to wear her Bee costume. You'd think she'd get used to it by now, since every year I dress her up (the little kids love it!), but noooooo, putting it on is, to her, the equivalent of pouring acid on her back. Can't you see the hate in her eyes? Plus it makes her look fat. Gawd, I can't even do it up, had to tie it on with a shoelace this year, so next year, thanks to two crazy sisters, she will be a skeleton and she'll hate that just as much.

I have two portrait sessions coming up in the next couple weeks, and will post some of the results after they are complete. Playing with Photoshop settings to make images look "vintage". It's a whole heck of a process, and I haven't got it quite set the way I want, but I had to showcase these two results.

Above, of course, is the little dog in all her glory, with toy in hand, uh, I mean mouth.

I finally did it! I made it to Lowville Park in time for the salmon run ... so very proud of myself. Yes, I suppose that's kind of sad, but small things amuse ... well, you know. Be warned, this post is picture heavy, so I won't bore you with too many words, just visions of salmon spawning (love is in the air, or water actually) and fall images taken over the course of two days. Perhaps I need to start calling this blog, Dogz n' Art and One Child.

It's tough to get out for the fall foliage photos with a one month old, but it's really the rain that's holding me back this year. Stupid weather people - they gave me the impression that it was suppose to be a warm, dry fall ... HA! wrong again! Hubby and I did manage to get out on the weekend to walk in the woods with the dogs and child in tow, without camera though, hence the lack of outdoor photos. And of course, the big dog flushed a couple pheasants, though they would have been too far away for a good shot, we always see wildlife when we don't have a camera.

When the darn rain lets up, I plan on making the yearly fall trip to Lowville Park for fall pictures, and I'm hoping this year to finally catch the salmon running, but I'm not holding my breath on that one. Every year I try, and every year I miss the spawn. I have no idea what my problem is.

So, in the mean time, I'm loving the black and white photography, especially of the little guy. I did thrown in some colour though ... the outfit was too cute to feature in black and white only.

Here is what my foster mommy has to say about me: "Rilee is a 3-year-old tri-color Jack Russell,Rilee is not used to meeting new people, but is getting better. Once Rilee knows you, she is a snuggly, friendly, bundle of love! She is good with kids, other dogs and cats (as long as the cat stands up for itself!) Rilee has a weakness for the garbage can buffet and needs to go to a home who will work with this habit. Rilee has a very good off-leash recall and will walk on a leash politely. Her sit is coming along steadily. She is equally happy romping through the grass, as she is curled up beside her human on the couch. Please give this loving, little girl a wonderful home!" Say hello to my latest dual creation. These two cuties are West Highland White Terriers. My parents have one of these feisty little creatures, and they definitely have the "terrier" attitude (if you don't know the 'tude, you're in for a big surprise when you find out, just ask Brandy). These guys were a blast to draw, the perfect pose for a great portrait!

Completed on Strathmore Bristol Smooth, 8"x10", in pencil. My clients were really pleased with this piece, and I'm always ecstatic when I can put a smile on someone's face after creating a portrait for them.

Happy Birthday Crazy Little Dog!

Today is my crazy little dog's birthday. Today my super smart Jack Russell Terrier, Brandy, turns (oh yuck, I hate to say it) 8 years old. Today I feel time has gone by way to fast.

The only picture not from the 50mm lens.

I can handle this - 24 degrees, no humidity, I'll take it!

So I finally got myself and the little dog out to one of the conservation areas today (Kelso Summit off of Steels Avenue), and though I knew I wasn't going to make it far, I thought I'd bring my new, cute little EF 50mm f/1.8II Canon lens with me to test her out (yes, I brought the camera too ... I'm not that dense).

This stumpy little Canon 50mm is touted as being the lens to have in every photographers kit, even though it's on the cheaper end as far as price comparison with other Canon lenses goes. Great for portraits and it's gaussian optics, I'm taken quite with this little bugger already.

Below is the results from a quick photo session in the woods, and though I didn't really take too much time on these photos, I am more than happy with the results from the 50mm.

Photos aren't edited except for a few filter changes in Photoshop and a desaturation on three of them.

I have no idea - she just like to eat grass...

Hi there, my name is Dexter and I am 9 years old, and about 17 lbs. I am looking for a new home due to young children in the house now that I don not get along with... I find them WAY too unpredictable, you know? As you can see, I don't mind the kitty who lives here, and we have another doggie here too, and I am cool with that as well! Like most jacks, I have met some dogs I am not very fond of, but many that I was as well! I love to chase a ball, play with stuffies and sqweekies, and love nature too! Experiments in Black and White, and shades of ... Jack Russell, by Julie Deans, Artist

Lately I've been neglecting my forest photography adventures, but I am finding that the older I get, the more I melt in the humid weather. And this summer, above average humidity seems to be the norm, forcing me to hibernate in my (thankfully) air conditioned home. So, I have to make due with what I've got at home for photos - and what I've got at home is a little crazy dog who likes to pose for the camera - though she'd prefer it if she made the rules, and not me.

This time, since we were indoors, without a bright blue sky or abundance of foliage for colour, I decided to experiment with some black and white (and shades of, with some colour blended in). The little dog seems to translate well to monochrome, it makes her look more debonaire and sophisticated.

She was getting bored with this shoot at the end ... it's not as fun when there is no toy or bone involved. What can I say ... she's just not a serious dog. Lazy? Yes. Tough? Yes. Smart? Hell yes! Serious? Not a chance. Takes after her people I suppose ...

Can dogs obsess? They sure can, and studies on dog behaviour issues, obsessions, fears, additions and imbalances etc. have become useful when looking at and researching similar behaviour quirks in humans. Hell, even the medication used in treatments is the same at times.
Can dogs have additions? Oh yes indeedy...toys and food come first to mind. It seems that additions and obsessions often go hand-in-hand - one can be addicted to and obsess over anything really.
The above picture is Brandy's obsession and addiction. The coveted BALL. I don't know what makes it so good, so luscious, so needed, but to her, it is all encompassing when it makes an appearance. Everything else ceases to exist when the ball comes out to play. I guess we all have our idiosyncrasies - crazy dog.

Milo's Acrylic Portrait is Complete!

Whew, after a long, hard fought battle with the 36"x36" canvas, I have finally overcome all odds, and am now victorious!

I will let the pictures tell the story for this one. I've compiled all of the progress photos so that you can actually see how the painting took shape over time. And of course, Brandy pitched in at the end.

It was very satisfying to work on a piece this large as the progress was so obvious all the way along ... helps with motivation.

Happy Canada Day to all my fellow Canadians! Here's to the greatest country in the world! Or at least I think it is. You've got it admit, it's a gorgeous place to live.

I suppose others my not necessarily agree, as today is also the first day of the new HST tax in Ontario. Not a big fan of that little nugget, but you win some and you loose some ... eh?

I am a wonderfully well mannered guy who only needs a new home cause my mommy doesn't have enough time anymore to give me the life I had and deserve. I love to cuddle and walk, and play and wiggle. I am great in the house and have never had accidents! I have been through obedience training and am wonderfully trained! I am good with other doggies and people too! Taco poses on the chair in my office

This adorably cute little fella is Taco the Chihauhau. One of the sweetest little dogs I've ever met, he's getting up there in age, but he still gets around pretty good. He came to my office to pose for reference photos and was a perfect little gentleman. Too cute for words, I just finished this little guy over the weekend, an 11"x14" pencil portrait to be delivered to his owner on Friday. Thanks for the opportunity to create this portrait for you Joette!

Productive Weekend

This weekend I spent some time finishing off a portrait, and working on Milo. The portrait has gone to the client for proofing, and I will post an image of it once I hear back. As far as Milo goes, he's really beginning to take shape. Poor guy, it's been a while since I put brush to canvas, but finally this weekend I was able to give him some attention and a bit of personality, so he's really coming along now. It felt good to fiddle with the acrylics again and I'm hoping to have him fully completed in the next few weeks. You can see his progress below:

Brandy and I also took in a CPE agility trial at Acton Agility. It's been a while since we've been on course, but the little dog surprised me and managed to get 4 out of 4 qualifying runs (a little elephant never forgets), and landed herself the Level 4 Standard Title (CL4-R). Lucky for me, she's still got it and probably always will have it. Smart little spoiled bugger.

Mourn the trees...

Brandy in nature - Burns Creek Conservation Area

Perhaps I'm sentimental, just a regular nature lover, or plain crazy (could be all of the above, though I think I've been called crazy the most), but it really bothers me to see someone uproot and discard of a perfectly healthy plant, especially a tree.

Trees do so much for our environment and health, really they do, and to see them killed for no other reason than because they are in the way, not the right colour, or some other useless reason, well, it makes me sick.

Which brings me to the reason why I have not gone near my "recently old" house. I can't do it. Our gorgeous weeping pea and Japanese maple in the front garden were thoughtlessly ripped out. Why? You ask, why? I really have no idea. The trees were extraordinarily healthy, well looked after and thriving. Both rescue trees I might add, which just makes their deaths worse.

So I put together a little collection of just a small portion of my nature photos that I've taken over the past few years ... to make me feel better. Sentimental? ... yup, I guess so ... crazy? sure why not.

Poor babies, these are the guys that got ripped out - how could you?

Getting There...

This truly has been a long "one more week". Settling into a new house, cleaning, organizing and puttering takes up a lot of time. I suppose it's all worth it in the end, because I really do love my new house ... though it still doesn't quite feel like home yet. Putting Brandy in the "art niche" helped a bit, and she seemed ok with being on display. My ever patient little friend.

I was actually able to finish two portraits over the past few months for one of my clients. A lot of drawing during lunch at work seemed about the only time (and space) I had to actually concentrate on my neglected craft (sad, I know). Max, the lab, a gift for my clients boyfriend, and what a gorgeous lab he is! The lucky guy gets to go to work with his owner every day.

Brandy prefers not to be at work with me. She isn't able to get a full days sleep with all the activity going on around her, so by the end of the day, she's fully wiped out and crabby - lazy little dog. I suppose I understand though, I feel about the same way when I get home from work too.

... until moving day!!

Oh thank God. I can't wait to get this over and done with, and life can get back to normal. Well ... as normal as it can be for me (I'm not sure if I can use the word normal).

Poor Milo has been sitting in a corner, begging me to finish him and my other drawings have been put on temporary hold until this much anticipated day has passed.

I really will miss this house though; the trees and garden out front, the grass, the paved driveway, the birds I won't miss the rabbits - but I think Brandy will - in a more morbid sense than I will miss the garden. Plus she likes to eat what they leave behind if you know what I mean. I guess it's like little chocolate chips, but not so chocolatey.

Sigh - a lot of good memories here, but now it's time to move on to bigger and better things 5 minutes down the road.

In the mean time, some random Brandy with her new favorite toy just because she wanted her picture taken (she really did, and no, I'm not crazy - the camera excites her for what ever reason ... only dog I know who runs up, grabs a toy and poses when she hears it turn on - ham).

What a horrible weekend

Desperation has set in, "You put the damn harness on, is it time to go!?"

Since this weekend, weather-wise, has been an absolute failure in my books (with wind gusts up to 100km/hr, rain, sleet, thunderstorms and cold weather), I thought I'd post some pictures from just 2 weekend ago, when the weather was much more appropriate for outdoor activities.

April 24th - Spring time at Rattlesnake Point. This time of year attracts A LOT of people to the park - hikers, campers, groups and of course, climbers. Me, I wouldn't trust hanging off the edge of a jagged cliff being held by only a rope and a tree or rock. No, definitely not for me, I'll walk and take pictures instead of repelling thank you.

So, once again, the little dog and I took to the woods on what was a lovely spring day in late April. A lovely spring day with too many frolicking wild raccoons. Well, of course they'd be wild wouldn't they, and possibly rabid? Great. It's a little disconcerting to see these buggers (who I am definitely not a fan of) in the middle of the day, when there is lots of human activity going on nearby. Usually lots of human activity mean no wild animals, except squirrels, which are not to bright to begin with, and birds that couldn't care less how many people are around. If you can make out the one climbing the tree in the photos below, that guy was on the ground, about 20 feet away from us when we came upon him, and Brandy had a melt down. If you don't think dogs scream, you haven't met mine. I suppose she wanted to pick a fight, I mean, she is a Jack Russell and all, but she ended up scaring it up a tree instead, which is perfectly fine with me - I don't want that thing anywhere near me, they are nasty little critters. The little dog wasn't the least phased by it, and I guess she can be a nasty little critter too (good 'ole instincts).

Anyway, here are the results of our hike, on a nice sunny warm spring day, as opposed to the days we're having this weekend. Here's to good weather.

Too bad I didn't have my zoom lens with me, then you would have been able to see the look of disgust on his face as he eye-balled Brandy.

Contest Winner Portrait Complete!

Well, certainly I'm not back at full speed here, which I'm sure most of you have noticed. Though accepting portraits and design work, I won't be back blogging again at my usual pace until sometime after May 20th (moving day!).

I wanted to share the portrait that was completed for Shelley, the winner of my portrait contest.

This is beautiful Maggie, the black and tan coonhound. A gorgeous dog, with tons of expression in that sweet face. Though Maggie is no longer with us, Shelley still deeply cherishes her, and this is what she had to say about the portrait:

"Wow, that is amazing. You do beautiful work. It brings tears to my eyes. You were able to keep the soft expression in her eyes. She has real doe eyes, and I can see them so clearly."

This portrait was great to work on as it gave me the opportunity to work with a lot of darker shades, great for depth, shadows and highlights. Congratulations once again Shelley on the contest win!

Still not here...

So, since I'm still being kicked out of my house on Saturdays for open houses, hubby and I thought a trip to the zoo with the neighbours was in order. MUCH better than hanging out in the car (that now has that subtle dog smell. No, not from Brandy. For what ever reason she always smells like soap and not dog. The other one, well, let's just say his odour is rather unwelcoming in small spaces).

I'm actually surprised I was able to find time tonight to actually sit down and make a post - 4 showings (and much car time) later.

My favorite animals, you ask? They are, of course, the big puppies (in this shoot the wolves and dholes). But they're all pretty cool in their own way, I'm just biased to canines, what can I say.

Without further ado, here are the fruits of my labour after about 3-4 hours walking on a rather blustery day through the Toronto Zoo whilst being kicked out of my house.

Hubby's favorite animal. Can't blame him, they're pretty impressive.

Hmm, I honestly don't remember ever seeing jellies at the zoo, so this was a new one for me.

This is a Dhole, in case you're wondering. Very vocal little guys.

On Hiatus (for now)

I am on hiatus until further notice, in the mean time...

Who here enjoys selling their house? Come on, I don't see any hands raised.

Ok, now who hear hates selling their house with a passion? Ah, a lot more hands raised now I see. And wow, look, my hand seems to be the highest and waving the most obnoxiously.

Selling your house sucks. Selling your house and keeping it spotless sucks even more. Selling your house, keeping it spotless and having to remove dogs during showings and open houses sucks the most.

I'm thinking of pitching a tent in the backyard, that way I don't have to leave every time someone wants to have a gander at the humble abode.

So, if you haven't guessed it, all work has ceased action until I can set up again with out messing up our superbly magnificent cleaning job.

It is nice to live in a super clean environment though ... I'd just prefer to have a maid keep it that way and not me.

Anyone want to buy a house?

More Milo Progress

Continuing on with my giant Milo portrait (whilst watching foggy olympic mens slalom in HD - wow, the fog is so ... um, crisp), I've added some heavier blocks of colour, tones and shadows. Looks like I've covered almost all of the canvas and am now ready to get down to some larger detail. This colour doesn't really reflect his true coat yet, but with more layers I will build upon that. He's really beginning to take shape though - so far so good.

After my two and half hours in front of the canvas today, I decided to take a break from the acrylic fumes, go for a walk and then continue reading my current, multi-times read (yes I re-read over, and over and over), Dean Koontz novel.

Upstairs, on the bed with Brandy, reading away in my own little world, I caught movement out of the corner of my eye. It turns out that either hubby did not close Mr. Chameleons cage door very well or the little bugger is damn smart and uses his oven mitt hands rather well. He decided to take it upon himself to exit the cage and go for a jaunt around the master bedroom, while Brandy was observing. I'll admit, it scared the hell out of me for a second to see a colourful, free-range lizard crawling up the bedspread near my face. Just a for a second mind you, he's really just a harmless little fella who thinks he's tough. Thank God I have a well behaved little dog who wouldn't dare lay a tooth on the chams. But had that been a cat or some furry creature crawling around my bedroom, I'm sure the outcome wouldn't have been as pleasant or bloodless.

I don't have a clue how long he'd been wandering, but he's been returned home now, with the cage secured (and double checked), heating up under his lamp. He really does like to come out and enjoy our company, but I'd prefer that he did it on our time, not his.

Milo Painting Progress

I got down to business today on this expansive painting, and was able to create a very subtly patterned background and block in colour on Milo himself (whislt watching the olympic mens ski-cross event - awesome!).

So far I enjoy working at this much larger size than I am used to. Though there is, of course, a lot more canvas to cover, at this size I am able to be a little more free with my brush strokes, and have found that I'm using less paint than what I thought I would.

So here is the background with a bit of patterning, which I toned down in the previous step as I found the colours were too harsh. I didn't want the pattern to take away from the dog, so I reduced it by over-painting with the original solid background colour (the lighter of the stripes).

And here is Milo beginning to take shape. I've blocked in most of the basic areas so that I can determine the darks from the lights and shadows.

So far so good, and I am already pleased with how the progress is coming along.

And now, I must take the dogs out and prepare myself for the Canada vs. US mens olympic hockey. I don't know if I'll be able to handle it, the suspense is killing me. Go Canada Go!!

Biggest Painting to Date!

A friend that I met through agility trials has given me the opportunity to created the largest piece that I've ever done to date. It will be a 3 foot by 3 foot acrylic painting of her beautiful Vizsla, Milo, and what a sweetie he is.

I will be documenting the progress of this painting (Hopefully. I'm so bad at the documentation process - I get carried away and forget to take pictures, which I suppose isn't a bad thing, but it hampers my record of progress on certain pieces) on this blog.

I thought I'd share two initial images, one showing the size of the canvas, the other showing the initial under-drawing.

Yes, that is me and Brandy attempting to show you just how big this piece will be. Three by three, well sure, I could use a ruler and figure out approximately what I was going to be delving into, but when you're a short person, with a short dog, you really get some perspective when you can handle the canvas in person, and take a picture of yourself (or your little dog) beside it. She's a big one!

This sketch may not be overly visible (you've got to look really hard to see it, and I mean really hard), but I wanted to add it in for progress purposes. Not being able to scan a 3 foot document really hindered the image quality as the camera just can't capture the lighter lines of pencil like the scanner can.

I've had to now designate my laundry room as the "painting room" for this piece since the spare bedroom, where I normally work, just isn't accommodating the overly large canvas (the bed and dresser seem to be in the way).

So stay tuned to this blog for more progress updates on the painting of Milo. This should be a great experience, and will hopefully encourage me not to be afraid to "go larger" in the future.

Coloured Pencil Portrait - Jaida

Beautiful Jaida, finished a few days ago. This is an 8"x10" coloured pencil piece that was an absolute pleasure to complete.

I have been in the process of returning to 8"x10" pieces, instead of the 9"x12" pieces listed on my web site. For some reason, frames for 9"x12"s are almost non-existent now in the retail stores, and I prefer to create pieces that are ready to frame for my clients so that it is not necessary for them to go out and pay 100's of dollars for custom framing. Many of the frames that can be purchased through retail outlets are quite nice, and there is a large variety to choose from in the 8"x10" size.

It is a shame, because the 9"x12" is a really nice size, and the paper is readily available at art supply stores, but I would like to stick with a size that makes life easier for my clients. So there will be a small price adjustment to reflect the smaller size on my pricing page.

Good CPE Sunday

Have you heard of CPE (Canine Performance Events)? It's another organization that holds agility trials throughout the US and parts of Canada, and I've got to say, I love it!

I highly recommend it for those first getting into the sport. I find the atmosphere more laid back than AAC, the courses are usually more forgiving for those getting started and there are lots of different games to play.

Brandy and I attended the Acton Agility CPE trial this Sunday, coming away with two new titles in Level Three. The little dog was fast, happy, and though not always spot on, she was listening well, and ran great over all.

Personalities and the Dogs We Love

After reading the post "The Right Dog" on "The Other End of the Leash" (Patricia McConnell), about how well our personalities coincide with the dogs we choose to share our lives with, it got me thinking about my own dogs, and how they've fit in our family.
*If you are interested in dogs and their behaviour, I highly recommend that you read Patricia McConnell's blog (above) or any of her books for that matter. She is an excellent writer and a wealth of knowledge on the subject.

Brandy? Yes, well, she is "the one". The similarities between our personalities are uncanny. The stubborn, back-talking, independent little brat with an extremely intelligent mind of her own, who is well read, some-what clean and hates following others can describe Brandy, or, if you like, it can describe me rather well. We just mesh and fit well together. We love our own space, are not clingy or needy, love to be active, physically and mentally, we get antsy when we don't get our daily exercise (but I don't chew my feet...wait, that's not true!), and we want things our own way, though we will defer to others on occasion...grudgingly.

After contemplating the above paragraph, I find it amazing how alike we really are. It seems almost impossible to be that similar to a creature who is not of our own species. But there it is, and when you think about it, dogs really are not that unlike us in many ways (besides the rear-end olfactory romps).

That is not to say that she wasn't a pain in the a$$ when we first got her. Heck, she was our first dog, and we hadn't a clue. The sassy little brat was a handful when she was tiny, and took to humping my calf as a favorite passed time until we took matters from her paws, and into our own hands - ah, puppy class. As soon as structure and training ensued, we had the "perfect" dog, in my eyes. Granted, she's quirky at times, again, not unlike myself, but I'm an artist, that's my excuse, and she's a Jack Russell, so I guess that's hers.

Mack, on the other hand, oh Mack. I will fully admit, he just doesn't fit in as well. He's dense, goopey, not well read, is anxious, needy, clingy, bossy but unsure, and basically unstable to put it nicely. His personality completely clashes with my own and Brandy's. I know for a fact, because she's confided in me, that Brandy barely tolerates him. I think it might be the smell, but I'm not sure. I won't claim him to be my dog, as he really falls under my hubby's jurisdiction, and I am truly ok with that as our relationship is rocky at best (not with my hubby, with the dog). (Mack and my other half do get along, it could be the gas, or even the messiness that draws them together, I'll never know for sure.)

Delving into the personalities of my own dogs allows me to see why and how our relationships are the way they are. The closer in personality to your canine companion seems to point to better relationships, understanding and bonding. The further you are, personality wise, the further you will be relationship wise. This leads me to draw the conclusion that not all dogs will fit well into all house-holds. Sometimes it's in everyone's best interest to allow that dog to move on to a family that fits better in regards to personality, so that the dog, and yourself, will have a happier, more fulfilling life. At times that's just the way things need to be, and though it may be tough, in the end, it's well worth it for both sides. If you have that dog who fits you like a glove, consider yourself lucky, as the assets that you gain from that relationship are amazing to say the least.

The idea of personality matching, such as the one noted in Patricia's blog (Main Line Mutt Match), is a good one, and something that all prospective dog owners should consider when they are thinking of adding a new member to the house-hold (speak to breeders or shelters about temperament tests and personality indicators). The better the personality match, the better you will all get along, and isn't that the point?

Meet Raymond - Rescue JRT

Why hello there, I am Raymond. I am a laid back and quiet fellow who just wants a place to share all my love and play and cuddle. I am nine years old, and love to play with my foster brother and my toys.. I love to go for my walkies, but also love to hang out and watch tv with you on the couch. I can sleep in a crate, but would way prefer to cuddle on your bed if you let me. I like to play with toys and can do so with you or alone... I play soccer with my tennis balls sometimes and it makes people laugh! I try to get in a good wrestling work out of two with my foster dog brother... we have a GREAT time together! I walk great on a leash and hardly ever bark. I even pop my head into my leash for you to make it easier to get ready to go! I am an all around wonderful calm lad who would make a great companion for almost any household! Maybe not really little kids, they might overwhelm me, but otherwise, I am a loyal, obedient, well trained, quiet, loving boy ready to move on and get over this horrible year in my life!

Portrait Contest

I thought it's about time I posted the information for entering the 5"x7" pencil portrait contest, so here we go.

This contest is for, as stated above, 1 free 5"x7" pencil (black and white) portrait - shipping included for Canada and US only. This portrait can be either a pet or a person. All I need from those entering is a clear, close up head shot of your pet/person of choice, and a little paragraph (a couple sentences) explaining who the pet/person is. Please send all files in JPEG format.

All submitted contact information (except first names) will be kept fully confidential. Digital Drawing

Yes, you'll notice that sometimes some of my images are poor attempts at digital drawing. I have yet to get the hang of the Wacom tablet. It causes me stress trying to draw on something that's not really something, but is attached to something, that transfers something to where the image shows up on screen. My bass-ackwards usage of the mouse (thanks dad), adds to the frustration level of trying to draw with the tablet pen when I think right is left, and left is right ... the tablet is a parallel universe where things are as they seem - oh my gawd, right is actually right! I've resigned myself to sketching by hand, scanning, opening the scan in Illustrator, (cheating) live paint/tracing, and them importing to Photoshop and painting in layers with the handy dandy good ole' mouse. Not quite the romantic, dignified or simplified way that I envisioned world of digital drawing, but it's got to work for the time being.

Perhaps I'm old fashioned, but I like the feel of a pencil or paint brush in my hand, moving and flowing against a piece paper or a canvas, it's comfortable ... is that weird? I suppose, maybe a little, but artists are allowed to be eccentric, right? At least I'm trying, and digital work is at the very least, more convenient than lugging around an acrylic paint set and canvas or a giant tackle box of markers, and it is much less obvious to others, that I'm actually drawing, ahem, for obvious reasons. Makes life easier. I suppose I should keep practicing - they say practice makes perfect you know, and maybe one day I'll get the hang of it.

Is she adorable or what!? What a good sport - well, she was this time anyway because I wasn't using a flash.

Yes, she's wearing a bow, but she is a girl no matter what she says. And yes, it's a Dove Spa bow, and no, she does not go to get her nails done.

This is my favorite shot out of this session. It just screams her personality of "I'm better and smarter than you".

Love the effect I got on this, looks more like an old-time black and white shot. She looks good in grey-scale.

It's the clear bone. The coveted clear bone. Not as good as the ball, but a first choice over any other Nyla.

Brandy got to spend a half day at work with me. Adds entertainment value to the office, and heck, everyone loves her, so she's always more than welcome. She's a good worker, not excellent on the keyboard but she'll learn.

These were more for artistic value than anything. We're well passed the days of partying 'till the whee hours of the morning - in bed at 1:30 am on New Years, that's not bad.

A Monday Off

After spending 45 minutes in a line-up at Best Buy for a price match on Monday, I decided I needed some time in the woods. I will mention that the 45 minutes was well worth it, $62 returned, a $22 gift card, and $5 back that they short changed me on Saturday. Hey, I'll give it to Best Buy, they dun good by me. And, smart me for being early, by the time I got to the customer service desk the wait in the line up was over two hours! I'm patient, but not that patient to wait 2 hours in a line, especially when I'm being herded through a make-shift chute, like a cow going to the slaughter house, with lots of other cows hanging around, waiting to embark upon the same fate. Slaughter house ... customer service, sometimes could be the same thing, worked out well for me though (and believe me, I don't envy those that have to work in the customer service industry over the holidays - no thanks, not for me).

So anyway, back to the woods. Makes me feel somewhat sane again after spending too much time in a crowded area, with lots of people just standing around waiting. So off to Lowville Park I went, with dogs in tow. I had debated a more remote area, but then stupidly, before I left, I read about an overabundance of bold coyotes this year, so decided upon a bit more of a civilized area. Be they coyotes or wild chickens, as has happened previously in my wooded adventures, I wasn't in the mood to run into either, so Lowville seemed like the safest bet.

Perhaps not the brightest choice though, as I can't even count the number of times I almost killed myself on the slick paths. A wee bit icy on the hills, inclines and even just the flat paths (it's a real challenge to walk up a steep hill when the path is covered in random, large ice patches under a thin, but disguising layer of snow). The wind and blowing ice/snow pellets really didn't add to the appeal either, but the fresh air was good and the dogs enjoyed it (they told me so). Hands down, it beats standing in a line-up for 45 minutes at a Best Buy out of town.

Brandy and Mack both picked their presents out from under the tree by themselves. I have no idea how they knew which was which. I didn't even address them, so it's not like they could read their names on any tags.

It's a shame that Christmas is over so quickly. the day just goes by too fast.

Twas the Night before Christmas

Done and Done

Ah, the Christmas portraits are complete, shipped and delivered, what a wonderful feeling. These two were a blast to create, with loads of personality in the fuzzy faces, and great reference photos from the clients.

I hope that these two pieces do justice to the beloved animals in them. I will say, I am quite pleased with how they turned out, and am looking forward to getting started on the next one.

Note: there isn't a line through the original, I had to scan Tequila's portrait in two separate pieces

I will be officially announcing the contest for a complimentary 5"x7" pencil portrait after the holidays are over, so stay tuned!

It's Arrived!!

Ah, to be woken up in the middle of the night to the sound of tiny droplets of freezing rain hitting the window, like a car being sand blasted before a fresh coat of paint is applied. Only roused for a second mind you, and I really didn't have time to compute the sound in my sleep heavy brain.

But then the morning arrived, and the deep voice of early day reminded me, "there's a ton of snow outside so be careful." Actually, there is no deep voice of early day, it was just my husband indicating how the day would begin. But, now that I think of it, Early Day would make a great actor or famous person name ... I will file that away for later.

Anyway, I rolled out of bed and hobbled to the window to witness this:

The first signs of winter... oh yes, it's coming, the snow has reared it's ugly, yet strangely beautiful, head and now we're well on our way to a typical Southern Ontario winter. Slow drives, icy roads, copious amounts of snow and bitter cold. On the bonus, I got to try out my new boots. Got to look on the bright side of cold sometimes you know.

Busy Time of Year

This is the time of year that commissions always pick up. Of course, they make great gifts at Christmas, but that means I have much less free time - no complaints here though, I love doing portraits!

Tequila, the adorable little Chihuahua, is almost complete. A few more area's to darken here and there, plus an addition of some memorial text and the the portrait will be finished. I've added the other half of the portrait below, and will post the full image once all the bits and pieces are done.

I am also currently working on a beautiful, male Husky for a client, in coloured pencil. This portrait is coming along nicely, and I'm really pleased with the textures and tones that I am able to create with the pencil crayons. This portrait will be completed as 9"x12", and is also a gift for my clients other half. A small sample below of the portrait progression so far.

In the mean time, Brandy has managed to pick up two, yes that's TWO qualifying runs in Steeplechase. A class that we always had difficulty with, and I can not count the number we've taken a stab at it and failed. We have always used the class as a warm-up, something that I didn't overly care about, and it gave her a chance to wind up before the rest of the runs. Steeplechase is always first where I trial, so it was perfect warm-up run. Never in a million years did I think that these "warm-up" runs would amount to anything, but they certainly have now. Our goal, 8 more qualifying runs next year to obtain her Steeplechase title. Lofty? Perhaps. Is she capable? Most definitely. Am I capable? Sometimes I wonder, but we're going for it anyway.

Hey hey! My name is Vibe, and I am a happy young girl of only one year old! I was found on a highway, and was brought into the Brampton shelter. I am very friendly and good with other dogs, EXCEPT when there is food around. I would love it if you helped me get over my food aggression and learn that there will now always be enough food,,,that I don't have to protect it anymore! I am very playful and love to play with my ball...I also understand "go get your ball" and will happily do so! I am in a home with another pooch right now and I am fine with them. I am a dive and would likely enjoy being the only dog in the house IF I had to choose... I am just a teeny tiny action package looking for a loving home! Adoption fee $200

Aggressive Dogs in Beginner Class?

My thoughts? Well, here goes, with a grain of salt.

I think dog aggressive canines can do well in a beginner group class setting under the proper instruction. Though I do believe that they should be privately assessed first for the level and type of aggression that they are displaying. Fear aggression needs to be handled somewhat differently than pure aggression, prey aggression etc.

If the levels are high, they should be worked in a private class first, one on one with the instructor, encouraging desensitization, and only then progress to the group class environment. If the levels are low to medium, sure, let 'em in. They can then learn how to behave appropriately around other canines with a positive, but firm approach. Of course, the handlers level of experience, knowledge and comfort definitely comes into play. If the handler can not control the dog in a proper fashion as directed by the instructor, or is not comfortable handling their dog around others, well, back to privates for them.

On the other hand, I do not believe that human aggressive canines should be in a beginner group class setting and here's why.

Too many people, including instructors, do not know how to appropriately deal with a human aggressive canine. There is a huge liability to the instructor/school if the dog happens to break free of it's owner and go after another student, and of course this means there is a huge safety issue for the rest of the students in the class. The other students are probably not be well versed in how to avoid a confrontation with a human aggressive dog. The "flooding" of people in this situation can cause more agitation and frustrate the dog further, causing it to retain it's aggressive view to people. And, of course, situations play out differently if it is fear aggression, or pure aggression.

In human aggressive canines, it is more common to see fear aggression towards people rather then true aggression, and private instruction on desensitization is very necessary. These dogs can be a huge liability and must be managed correctly in order for them to live safely and comfortably around people. I will not delve into details on how to desensitize here, but it is my opinion that these dogs do not benefit from a group class setting in beginner training or being flooded with people who have no idea how to react around this kind of canine.

In all my years around dogs, dog sports and training classes, I've seen only one truly human aggressive dog, actively displaying some fear aggression but becoming more confident in the situation, though the dog looked to be badly trained in some sort of personal protection venue. It's reactivity was quite high, especially around women, which is an oddity in itself because fearful dogs on the whole, normally display stronger reactions (be it fight or flight) to men rather than woman. And the fact that it looked to be well over 90 pounds didn't add any positivity to the situation.

Not by my choice, this story hasn't ended yet, but I'm curious to see the outcome, so we shall see if I come away with all of my limbs intact in the end.

Handle with care...

EDITED Nov. 25, 2009 - Whew, said dog has been removed from class to work one-on-one with the trainer (what I was hoping to see). I'm not afraid of dogs, not even nervous around aggressive ones, but I'm glad to know that my limbs will be kept intact for later use.

Plant Rescue Anyone?

Meet our Cyclamen. For the purpose of this post, I will call him "Steve".

Steve came to us as part of a wedding gift from my parents back in spring of this year. A wedding gift that was somehow overlooked and left behind with my well-meaning mom and dad, who have a way of killing plants with love that is just amazing.

My mom called about a week later to let me know that Steve was still at the house, and we neglected to take him. I told her we would pick him up next time we came down.

Next time came and went, and we did it again. No Steve.

Steve was banished from memory for a while, until my mom brought him up in one of our ensuing weekly phone conversations. Steve was still at their house, but "your father fed him and now it's dead". He was originally doing well enough, not thriving, but not hurting either. But then, my dad fed him. My dad seems to enjoy feeding the plants for what-ever unknown reason.

A nice large, yellow road sign beside all of the live plants in thier house that says "DO NOT FEED THE PLANTS", sort of like the "DO NOT FEED THE BEARS" signs that you see up in Northern Ontario, would have helped Steve's situation. Though, the reasoning is slightly different - unlike the bears, the plants don't seem to become aggressive when they're fed by humans, they just die.

So there sat Steve, on their kitchen counter, in his final death throws, the few leaves left barely hanging on, yellow tinting their edges, indicating that his time in this world was almost up. Steve had been in full flower at the moment when we were to have originally take him home. Not so anymore.

I told my mom not to discard of him, "but hang on, we're coming up soon, and we'll bring him home. Hubby likes to tinker with indoor plants, and bring them back from certain, impending death, so we'll give Steve a chance." Of course, at the time, he was just 'the plant' and not 'Steve'.

Steve finally came home with us about 2 months after we were suppose to have originally taken him. Though, not neglected, but beaten down by too much love and food, he was a mess. That is where hubby took over. He has a way with plants like no one else I've ever seen. Him and Steve took to each other right away, and it was the beginning of a beautiful relationship.

Steve blossomed, pun intended, under my husbands watchful eye, becoming stronger and more vibrant everyday. He spent the summer on our porch, just watching the crazy world go by, and it became clear that he he was meant to be here with us, not in a garbage somewhere as another discarded, unwanted house-plant. His leaves multiplied, his stalks and chutes became firm, and eventually he needed to be re-potted in a larger container. A very good sign in the world of plants. Steve was getting fat.

With Steve flourishing under hubby's care, we were eager for the day to come when he would produce flowers.

Months went by, and he continued his neighbourhood watch, though now it was from our bedroom window, bathed in sun during the day, and protected from the evils of frost at night. Still no blooms.

Every day we checked, searched through his leaves, intruding upon his personal space in hopes that we would find the beginnings of a flower or two. No such luck.

Then, one day my husband called me to come and have a look. Steve had buds, soon to be flowers!

And the rest, my friends, is history.

Steve, in the photos of this post, is doing extremely well, is happy, well-adjusted, healthy, loving life and full of flowers. A nice little token, a happy memory of our wedding, though he was not with us in Cuba, he is a refreshing, fat little reminder of that day.

My husband has brought many plants back from the brink of death, from umbrella trees, to cyclamen, ficus trees, to Japanese maples and the unknown, rather large tree/plant thing that is sitting in front of our living room window. So, if anyone has any unwanted house plants, he'd be happy to rescue them from you, and give them a good caring, knowledgeable home where they will be loved and appreciated. He likes plants, what can I say?

A New Pet Portrait

Initial stages of a new portrait - Tequila

I love what I do, truly, I do. The art of, well, creating art fascinates me, entertains me and keeps me busy. I delight in handing over a finished piece and seeing how people react. I enjoy being able to create something special for people, that captures a memory, a look, personality or spirit.

There are times, however, when my job is heart breaking. I am often called upon to do "memorial" portraits of loved ones passed, be they animal or person. Though it is sad to reminisce that these lives have left us too soon, I am thankful that I am able to provide a special image, a memory for families that can be cherished for years to come, and I really hope that my work does justice to those who have gone before us.

This new piece that I am working on is heart breaking indeed. I was contacted by a client to create a portrait of his girlfriends beloved chihuahua as a Christmas gift. We worked out the details, and I met him and the adorable little canine one night after work to pick up the reference photos. What a beautiful little dog, full of life and happiness, just bursting to be petted and loved, a personality that I absolutely adore seeing in a dog.

With photos obtained and client met, I sat down to begin creation of this portrait. The finished product will be a double, with two poses of the little dog, and a name title on 11"x14" paper in pencil.

I received an email from the client over the weekend, full of horrible news. There was an accident and the dog, so full of life and love, unfortunately did not make it. I was shocked, and left speechless. It is extraordinarily difficult to lose a beloved pet, and the relationship that can be built with an animal is nothing like relationships that we share with our own species. The unspoken love and the awe of innocence is one of the most powerful feelings you can harbour, and the loss of a pet is just as great as the loss of a parent, sibling, child, friend or family member.

So now this portrait is a memorial, a dedication to this little dog that was taken away from her owner far too soon.

Though the outcome of this is heart breaking, it lifts my spirits that I have been blessed with the ability to provide the owner with something that she can cherish and remember her tiny companion by for years to come.

RIP Tequila.

Meet Amber - Rescue JRT

Hello, my name is Amber, and I am a dainty little lady of 8 years old who needs a new home due to grankids' allergies. They are very very very sad to have to send me away too! I am a good girl who likes other small dogs, cats, and I really like nice kids! I am sweet and loving, and love to be a part of everything my people do! I am housetrained, leashtrained, and like to ride in the car as well! I can even play soccer with you, or your kids! I am just your all around good nice pooch with no issues and I just want to find a nice happy new home where I can stay for good!

It's that time of year...

Christmas is coming. It takes us by storm now, attacking us like an F4 tornado, images, commercials and gifts being tossed at us as easily as a tornado tosses houses, even before Halloween has come and gone.

I miss the days when it took so long to come, as a kid, desperately hoping that the time would speed up, the stores would start decorating, and Santa would visit the malls, his presence indicating that the holiday was near. Now it's too early, too soon and too much. It kind of takes away from the magic.

However, now that Halloween has passed, I guess this is the time to start preparing, sooooo...

This weekend certainly showed no indications that Christmas, let alone winter, is around the corner. With temperatures in the mid-teens, everyone seemed to be taking advantage of the warm November days, myself included. It was a Conservation Area weekend, with dogs in tow. This is the little dog's favorite weather, and she takes advantage of it when she can. The areas were packed, both Saturday and Sunday, and I actually witnessed, for the first time in my life, people being turned away from Hilton Falls as there was no room left to park. Cars filled the lot like sardines squished into a can, line ups of cars waiting for someone to leave so that the occupants could enjoy the outdoors as well.

Needless to say, I didn't wait - I'm impatient. We visited Crawford Lake and Kelso this weekend instead. No pictures, just enjoying the weather.

The leaves are exceptionally loud at this time of year. And they are exceptionally dense on the ground. So dense that the paths are not visible. Once again, I almost lost myself in the woods of Crawford Lake. I'm thinking that I should bring provisions next time. Some water, food, a compass and a tent perhaps? Thank God for the little yellow arrows hanging off random trees pointing the way along the path that is not visible. I wasn't lost for long, perhaps 2 minutes. I'm really not that naturally challenged. And hey, the little dog back-tracks well, so no need to panic. Ahhh the woods.

How Important is Good Photography?

This is something that I've been dying to get across to my real estate agents at work. Why oh why do some insist upon taking there own photos? It is something that I just can not wrap my head around especially when good marketing is such a key tool in the business. Hopefully this will open some eyes and lend some advice to those who are still snapping their own shots and posting them on the MLS.

Highly professional, great turn around times, and fantastic prices, it is well worth it to spend the money on this company when it comes to real estate photography.

This is a question that should enter the minds of every single real estate agent before they begin their career. However, often times this all important topic is overlooked, and agents fail to see the relevance in it. Photography can make or break the way your potential clients view your professionalism, it can be the difference between turning people off your listings on mls or creating interest in the home you are trying to sell, and it can greatly enhance or badly ruin any of your marketing materials. The number one most important tip that I tell my clients when they are contemplating photography, is to have a professional, who knows what they're doing, take the photos for them. Although many take this advice, there are still a high number of agents who insist upon capturing their own images, and this article is here as a simplistic, easy to read, non-technical aid to help those "stubborn" ones become more skilled at the task of taking interior and exterior house and building photography.

Type of Camera

The first issue that needs to be over come is the type of camera that is being used. If you insist upon taking your own photos, then it is time to invest in an adequate camera to get the job done. There are many good quality point and shoot cameras on the market today, from Nikon to Canon to Kodak and everything in between. Many of these can produce decent looking photos for everyday use, however, none can compare with the quality of the digital SLR's that are available to us now. Often times the flash on the point and shoots is inadequate, and megapixels are too low, the zoom is lacking, and there are no extra lenses that can be added, such as a wide angle, which is important in this type of photography. The best advice I can give is to either spend the money and purchase a good quality Canon or Nikon digital SLR, or make sure that you purchase a high-end point and shoot such as the Canon S3 IS or it's equivalent in another brand. These high-end point and shoots (S3 IS) offer many advantages over the lower quality one's and even allow for extra lense ad-ons, however, the digital SLR's are the way to go if you are looking at creating professional quality photos. There are many different lenses, flashes and other ad-ons available and the quality produced by these is unsurpassable.

Take A Class

Once you've decided upon your weapon of choice
(digital SLR - hint hint) you need to seriously consider taking some classes in order to learn the proper operation of the camera, it's settings and the nifty little features that it comes with. Even a short seminar is better then nothing, enabling you to become familiar with basic procedures of operating your camera.

Tips for the Amateur

These are tips that may seem obvious to some, but are lacking by many when it comes to amateur real estate photography.

Good lighting - Lighting is extremely important for any photography, and shooting indoors can have it's challenges. Decent natural lighting from outside is always helpful. Open curtains and blinds to enable the full benefit of the sunlight. Remember to never shoot directly at a bright window with open blinds. Angle the shot, so that it is not directed squarely on the light source. Shooting directly at a bright window will creating a glowing effect on the window itself, and everything else in the shot will come out very dark. If there is no other way to shoot but directly at the window, close the blinds, utilize the flash and the interior lighting of the home. Turn on the interior lights, even if it is during the day. Keep in mind though, that incandescent bulbs can throw off a yellowish tone, so depending on the amount that are used, the photos can take on a yellowish hue. Invest in an extra flash. This can be extremely helpful in houses that have dark interiors, small amounts of windows, and those lacking exterior light.

Use a Tripod - If you think that you are at all unstable while shooting, set up a tripod and utilize that for your photo shoots. A tripod will keep the camera from moving during a shot (unless your too rough with it) and reduce the "blur" that movement causes in a picture.

Pay Attention to the Layout of the Shot, Take Your Time - Many agents fail to actually look at what they are shooting, and just "point and click" to get the job done quickly. Take a minute to look through the camera at what is and isn't in the shot. Move around the room and try different angles to see what will work best. If you need to, move items that are in the way, such as a nick-knack on a coffee table, or a chair that looks out of place. Hopefully you've had the house staged so that you will not have to take too much time rearranging, but there are still little things that will pop-up that will need to be removed in order to make the shot look better. Don't shoot directly at a piece of furniture - you are selling the house, not what's inside of it, and many agents make this mistake. Shooting directly at a piece of furniture ends up making the room look extremely small, and shows no other details besides the offending couch, chair or table that you just snapped. It would be wise to invest in a wide-angle lens. These lenses are wider then the standard ones, and can capture a larger amount of the horizontal image, enabling you to create a better, "wider" field of vision photo of the room you are shooting.

You've Got a Digital, So Look at the Shots You've Taken Before You Leave - You have the ability with a digital camera to scan through the photos you've taken while you are on-site. I highly recommend viewing them on your camera before you leave the home. You don't have to scrutinize every single one, however, it is good to take a quick look to first of all make sure you've captured all of the rooms that you wanted, and second to make sure that the pictures that you've taken are good enough to use in your marketing materials. Many times I've seen shots come in from digital cameras, and they are out of focus, or there is too much movement (hand shake) creating a horrible image that shouldn't be used on any print or web material. This could have been avoided by simply previewing, and re-shooting if need be.

Horizontal or Vertical for Small Rooms - Have a good look at the room you are shooting. Is it a large family room, a medium sized bedroom or a small powder room? View the room through the camera and observe how much will fit in the shot. If the room is medium to large, a horizontal image (the typical way a photo is taken) will work best. If the room is small, like a powder room, or tiny bedroom, flip the camera on it's side so that you are shooting vertically, and test that angle. In small rooms, using a horizontal shot will most likely show too much wall, door or other unwanted item. Because you will probably be standing outside of the room in order to get the shot, you will need to flip the camera so that you can shoot through the doorway. And if you are confused about standing outside the room, the further back you move, the more of the room that you are able to fit into the photo, hence shooting through the doorway. If the small room is not terribly important to the house, skip the shot, do not put it in your marketing material, these shots, unless taken by a professional, never quite turn out good enough for presentation on printed promotional items.

Stage, stage, stage!- Staging is so important in being able to market and sell a home. Homes that are staged look a lot more attractive, less cluttered and more "professional" then one's that aren't. Staging is extremely useful when photographing the home as well. The pictures convey the above through your marketing materials when the home is staged properly and looks it's best. Staging helps to showcase the home properly in your marketing materials as well as in person. Have a professional stager complete this job for you. And, though this is redundant but because I've seen it happen, I will mention it anyway, take the photos once their job is complete, never rush and take them before the house has been beautified.

Overall, keep in mind that you are "showcasing" a home, and to do that correctly, the photos need to be of high enough quality to impress the home owner, as well as the potential buyers. Using the tips above will help those agents who want to take their own photos become a little more adept at the task. However, once again, it is in your and your clients best interest to have a professional photographer capture the home, and I highly recommend using one for this type of work, but good luck to those who are brave (or stubborn) enough to tackle home photography on their own - it can be a real challenge.
